what is positive behaviour support (PBS)

The Goal OF Positive behaviour support

Our skilled practitioners work closely with you to address the underlying factors behind challenging behaviours and create practical strategies to reduce them or replace them with safer, more positive alternatives. We focus on a person-centred approach to develop practical and tailored behaviour support plans focussed on improving quality of life.

What is Involved

Positive Behaviour Support involves:

  • Completing functional behaviour assessments
  • Consultations, observations, and data analysis to understand behaviour functions, routines, environments, and current management strategies.
  • Collaboration to address goals, needs, and preferences.
  • Development of Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs)
  • Training and support for carers, parents, and support teams
  • Direct intervention with participants to build new skills (where appropriate)
  • Progress review and behavioural data monitoring
  • Monitoring and fade out of restrictive practices (where relevant)

Each Behaviour Support service delivery is different to tailor to each participant's need. An Individual Support Plan will be carefully created during the initial appointment to identify the best approach to suit participant goals.

What is a Behaviour Support Plan?

A Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) is a personalised document which outlines strategies to support the participant. This plan provides practical steps for preventing and responding to behaviours of concern, building new skills, improving communication, and creating positive environments.

The goal of each Behaviour Support Plan is to enhance each participant's quality of life, independence, and safety.

What are Restrictive Practices?

The NDIS defines restrictive practices as actions or interventions that limit a person's rights or freedom. Sometimes, restrictive practices are necessary as a last resort intervention to prevent harm to a participant and others.

These restrictive practices must always be used safely, ethically, and under professional guidelines. The NDIS Commission requires any use of restrictive practices to be clearly outlined in a BSP and approved through a formal process. Where restrictive practices are identified, BSPs will detail how these practices will be safely used and the aim is always to reduce and eliminate the need for restrictive practices over time through effective positive behaviour support strategies and building new skills.

We ensure that we nurture and respect dignity, choice, and human rights to ensure every participant is supported safely and with integrity.

NDIS Funding

Positive Behaviour Support is funded under the NDIS Capacity Building support category of "Improved Relationships".

There are two funding line items within "Improved Relationships" which are Specialist Behavioural Intervention Support (11_022_0110_7_3) and Behaviour Management Plan Including Training in Behaviour Management Strategies (11_023_0110_7_3).

You may also have a third funding line item within "Improved Relationships" which is Individual Social Skills Development (11_024_0117_7_3) - we also provide support to assist participants in developing their social skills for participation in community and social activity.
